My Horse, Myself
This collection of intimate biographical interviews dramatizes the transformational aspects of the horse-human relationship. Eighteen independent, unconventional horsewomen from Taos, New Mexico, a place well known for its remarkable female residents, talk about the ways in which horses have sustained them in times of trouble, encouraged them to explore unacknowledged feelings, and challenged them to transcend imagined limitations. Unlike the many books about women and horses that deal in general principles interspersed with examples, My Horse, My Self allows its subjects to speak for themselves, in their own distinctive voices. We see these women up close and personal, which encourages the reader to identify with, and thus learn from, the emotional and physical challenges they have faced and overcome
The interviews are accompanied by evocative black and white photographic portraits that capture the essence of each woman’s story as well as the rustic beauty of northern New Mexico.
The target audience includes women who love horses, men who are bewildered by women who love horses, animal lovers in general, and anyone captured by the rustic charm of Taos and Northern New Mexico. Descriptions of the interview settings--- barns, corrals, old adobe homes with the high desert and mountains as a backdrop--- give the book a strong sense of place.
Published by Casa de Snapdragon, a NM independent press, My Horse, My Self was a 2015 first place winner in the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards. It is available on Amazon or from the author.
